Podcasts and Videos to Check Out

Podcasts: like an on-demand radio show, you can stream these on a computer or other device or download and listen later. There are many podcasts available, but here are a few focused on sustainable agriculture, leaders in food and farming, and yummy food.
  • Heritage Radio Network - a great clearinghouse for audio content about food and farming, including the following podcasts:
    • The Future of Food Leadership (FFL) - profiles of the young people leading in sustainable food throughout the world
    • We Dig Plants - all about the relationships between humans and plants from two garden designers
    • Let's Get Real - hosted by a professional chef, this podcast identifies what is fake and what's real in the world of food
    • The Farm Report - the host interviews real farmers about issues they face everyday
    • Just Food Stories - profiles on food leaders from a non-profit based in New York City
    • Taste Matters - all about the importance of taste, from a cultural perspective, from a biological perspective, and more
  • Permaculture Voices - profiles of cool people doing things in food, gardening, and sustainability
  • Table to Farm - a podcast from Slate magazine about where particular foods come from
  • The Sporkful - a slightly goofy podcast about different food-related topics from a guy who really likes to eat
  • You Bet Your Garden - a Philadelphia-based podcast about everything you'd ever want to know about gardening
  • Coopcast - a podcast from a small homestead farm about their daily adventures
Videos: there are tons of cooking shows and gardening how-tos (sometimes called "webinars" if they are like a class or a Q&A in format). Here are just a few geared toward young people.
  •  "Cooking for Kids & Teens" playlist on YouTube - this is a collection of videos of kids and teens cooking and of videos adults showing how to prepare simple and easy recipes for beginners
  • Kid Chef Eliana de Las Casas - this young chef hosts her own cooking show on YouTube, on tips and tricks in the kitchen, travel specials to major food destinations, recipes from various cultures, and more
  • "Video and Audio" at Cooking with Kids, Inc. - this Santa Fe, NM-based organization has lots of videos of their staff working with young people on local TV and elsewhere to cook easy fun dishes
  • The Organic Teen - this 16 year old shares insights and issues faced while learning to garden organically on his YouTube show
  • Ryan Beard - this teen has videos on gardening and horticulture, cooking, wildlife, and more, with very specific topics on his YouTube channel
  • "Vegetable Gardening: How to Plant a Vegetable Garden for Children Step-by-Step" - easy starter video on YouTube. After that, the possibilities are endless.
  • USDA - learn about national issues in food and agriculture through the United States Department of Agriculture's YouTube channel, featuring weekly news highlights, information about nutritional guidelines, tips on farming, and more
  • FAO - learn about international issues in food and agriculture through the United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)'s YouTube channel, featuring videos about efforts to do things like support small farmers, analyze the nutritional composition of different foods, reduce food waste, and more 
  • TEDtalks - entertaining lectures about cutting edge ideas in food, horticulture, agriculture, and more
