Philly Area Local

Southeastern Pennsylvania is full of food-focused organizations, programs, and publications, and there are many opportunities to find information, gain experience, and help improve your community and the region. Here are a selection of some starting points in this area.
  • Organizations and Programs
    • PASA Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture - state organization with networking and training opportunities and events like a big annual conference at PennState and others closer to home, like a bike ride in Downingtown
    • Penn State Extension Services - including guides for lots of topics related to food and agriculture, events, contact information for extension agents (experts who can help you out), and information about local 4-H programs for young people
    • Slow Food Philly - a group of people who love to eat and support locally and fairly produced food through classes and other events
    • Rodale Institute - one of the leaders in organic farming research and publication is so close! Rodale publishes gardening magazines, books, guides, and reports, and you can visit the farm or attend an event
    • Triskeles - Food for All and Food for Thought programs based in Exton and Philadelphia offer training and job skills to teens and younger kids
    • Greener Partners - Farm Explorer mobile learning station and other programs and opportunities to learn for young people of different ages + on-farm volunteer opportunities
    • Free Library of Philadelphia Culinary Literacy Center - demonstration kitchen with cooking and nutrition classes for people of all ages
    • City Harvest - PHS (Pennsylvania Horticultural Society) partners with prisons and other organizations to provide fresh produce to neighborhoods in the city (PHS also has a community gardening guide for Philadelphia)
    • Fair Food Philly - a membership organization that connects and supports local food businesses (farms, restaurants, and others) in the area by selling their products at Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia and other places, and offering events like classes and workshops to educate
    • Philabundance - this organization works throughout the Delaware Valley to redistribute food to those who need it and to offer programing for seniors, kids, and those seeking job skills
    • The Food Trust - this organization runs farmers' markets, programs in schools, at corner stores, and in neighborhoods, mostly in the city, but it also works for policy change throughout the country through research and advocacy
  • Publications
    • Edible Philly magazine about food and agriculture in our area - available for free in print at certain pickup locations and online
    • Grid magazine about sustainable activities and organizations in our area, including lots of food and farming issues (especially in the annual food guide) - available for free in print at certain pickup locations and online
